WILLIAM EDWARDS Woodturner Woodturning
is a craft with a long history......and for most of that history it has been concerned
with producing useful items for the household; from wooden bowls to lamp stands
and furniture. In more recent times it has moved into a different sphere where
wood which was once discarded because of natural defects or discolouration is
now prized as the raw material for creative designs which are often more sculptural
than functional. In my woodturning I try to find a balance......a bridge
between the purely functional and the purely creative. Using only native timber,
I produce items which are in some way functional, but also, I hope, ornamental
and unique. The emphasis is on the character of the timber, keeping the
designs as simple as possible. The hardwood trees which grow wild or cultivated
in County Clare provide an incredible range of colours, textures, hardness, density
and grain patterns and I produce a wide range of woodturnings inspired by this
diversity; bowls, lamps, boxes, candle stands, vases and clocks. I
offer tuition in woodturning in my workshop, situated in the unspoiled countryside
of East Clare close to Lough Graney. For information about products and courses
